Snorkel among the Giant Clams
The giant clams are located in the lagoon about 50m offshore off the coast of Upolo, in about two metres of sheltered water, and are easily reached from a sandy shore. For me these 70cm long molluscs are on a par with seeing manta rays and more spectacular than the giant turtles. The clams can only be visited within 3 hours of high tide so start times may vary. The clam reserve is closed on Sundays.
Leaving from our depot, the trip can be undertaken on e-bikes or mountain bikes and can be escorted or self guided. Either way it is a great way to experience much more of the real Samoa with the clams as a memorable highlight. An admission fee applies.
Challenge Levels
The trip has riding options to suit everyone from occasional riders and young families to those wanting a solid challenge. Ride between 14 and 40kms.
These can be experienced on guided or unguided options and with or without ebikes.
Suitable for families, less experienced riders and for everyone who wants the chance to observe village life at its natural pace.
The ride begins with 14 kms of flat, quiet roads beside the lagoon. As it wanders through the villages you may be tempted to stop and chat, or get invited into a mat making group.
The coastal section is followed by a very steep section where the road rises 200m in 2 kms. Those without ebikes who are not strong riders are recommended to take the Supported option and get a ride over the hill.
From the saddle the road descends steeply on a gravel surface before continuing a short distance beside the lagoon to the Giant Clams.
Less experienced riders are encouraged to take the guided option or arrange a van ride back, as the return trip is over 40kms.
Follow the Village Ride route, but challenge the king of the hill title and ride back after the swim.
The giant clams are in a sheltered lagoon. Your guide is used to less confident snorkellers and we can provide life jackets and/or swim noodles as required.
No snorkelling experience is required, but participants do need to be confident swimming out of their depth.
